Crystals can be harvested from any point along the microchannels of the Crystal Formers, regardless of the Crystal Former format. Detailed video instruction is provided below.

Harvesting from the new SBS High Throughput Crystal Former

First, turn the crystal former so the back film is facing up.

With a sharp blade, cut 2 or 3 tabs connecting individual microchannel back films

Apply very firm pressure to make sure that the tabs are completely cut

Remove the film using fine forceps and flip it over carefully, as it may contain crystals

Apply 10 to 20 ul of mother liquor or cryoprotectant to the back film and the channel immediately to prevent drying out

Dislodge crystal from channel and harvest

Harvesting from the 16-channel Crystal Formers

First, Flip the crystal former over so the back film is facing up

With a sharp blade score the back film on either side of the microchannel

Then, apply strong pressure to cut the back film completely. It may take several cuts on each side to accomplish this

Remove the film using fine forceps and flip it over carefully, as it may contain crystals

Immediately apply 10-20 microliters of mother liquor or cryoprotectant to the back film, then to the channel to prevent crystals from drying out

Place the Crystal Former under the microscope to harvest the crystals.
